Core Requirements by License: LPC, LMFT, and LCSW

While each license type has slightly different processes, they share much in common: training, clinical experience, and board approval are all required. Here’s a table with a side-by-side comparison of the key requirements:

License-Specific Highlights

Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor (LPC-S)

  • Active LPC license in good standing for at least 60 months (5 years).

  • Completion of either a 40-hour supervision training course completed within 90-days and taught by a LPC-S (per §681.147) within the past 2 years, or a doctoral-level supervision course taken for credit within the past 5 years at an accredited institution.

  • Submit an application and all applicable fees.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker – Supervisor (LCSW-S)

  • Active LCSW license in good standing for at least 2 years.

  • Completion of a 40-hour supervision training course completed within 90-days and taught by a LCSW-S.

  • Submit an application and all applicable fees.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist – Supervisor (LMFT-S)

  • Active LMFT license in good standing with at least 3,000 hours of LMFT practice post-licensure over a minimum of 3 years.

  • Must complete either:

    • A 3-credit hour graduate supervision course from an accredited institution.

    • Completion of a 40-hour supervision training course completed within 90-days and taught by a LPC-S, LCSW-S, or LMFT-S.

    • An AAMFT-approved Fundamentals of Supervision course.

  • Submit an application and all applicable fees.
